During the past 25 years, cognitive psychology has become the dominant paradigm for mental health professionals. The reason is because advanced sensing technology has permitted scientists to study the brain and how it functions - without invading the brain, .i.e. without going into the skull...which tends to kill the subject! The result has been an explosion of understanding of how the brain works. This understanding has revolutionized psychology, because human psychology takes place 100% in the brain. Psychologists know a lot more about things like learning, emotion, memory, reason, association, perception, etc.
What will become of it? Well, science is only beginning to understand the brain, though great discoveries have been made so far. Technology continues to improve rapidly, so brain research will continue and it's impact on cognitive psychology will continue. As discoveries about brain function continue to inform psychology, cognitive psychology will become more and more "cognitive neuropsychology."
