Why is the job of parenting so looked down upon? It's the most important and one of the hardest jobs; it requires immense patience, communication, imagination, time management, and is 24/7. So why do so many people seem to think stay at home parents do nothing?

The

"2) there is no required minimum education or exams"

raises an interesting point.

I keep cringing at the parents who bother to stay home just to plunk the kids in front of the television.

And the impassioned defences of mothering skills that sometimes come from women who're barely literate.

Etc. I think a small but vocal group don't take it seriously. Done well, it _is_ a skilled f/t+ job that requires a fair whack of education -- and intuition, and everything you mentioned, and then some. But it's too easy for people to do a bad job and think nothing of it -- and make it look like they're the norm for stay-at-home parents. My mother went to university, and stayed home with her kids; I'm about to do the same, and for some reason, that's "wasting" one's education to a good number of people. Absurd, but that's public perception for you.

I am a stay at home mom and my husband says when he gets home, " Why are you so tired, all you do is sit around the house all day?" and that's no true. I have a 2 1/2 year old that I run around all day and try and get her to be good, and then I have a 9 month old that cries when I am try to clean a mess or change dirty diapers. I watch a 6 month old a 15 month old and a 3 year old as well most of the day and I promise, I think they plan when to do what to see how far they can push me. On top of all of this, I am 12 weeks pregnant and I just ain't what I used to be. But I watch the kids to bring in extra money. Staying home is hard because not only do you have to watch kids, but you have to clean and cook too. If only people tried to do what stay at home moms do!!!!!

I think everyone doesn't consider it a job because it doesn't pay in actual money. I am a stay at home mom and I just tell everyone that I get paid in love.
This is definitely the hardest job that I've ever had. It is a 24 hour a day job 7 days a week with hardly anytime to shower little alone eat. I just get satisfaction knowing I can tell our sons one day that I was blessed because I was able to stay home and take care of them.
My husband's mom stayed home until he was in school and to this day he is still proud of this.

For the mere fact that they haven't done it before! People that don't experience things shouldn't have any room to talk. Until they stay at home day in and day out- then I would say they don't have an opinion about it. Keep on doing what your doing because nurturing your children and staying at home is the best thing you can do for them.
