Someone with a petite figure may want to choose a ball gown style of dress. A princess or Cinderella type dress elongates a short waist and helps to lengthen the torso.
Women who have a smaller bust line can appear larger when the top of the dress is accentuated with intricate details and has an on-the-shoulder neckline.
Petite figures can appear to have their height lengthened in full skirts with minimal details. Simple sleeves, modestly detailed shoulders, vertical pleating, and a-line or princess silhouettes elongate the torso and add height.

Try wearing something that has several colors in it. Not too busy but just enough to pick-up the color in your eyes and bring out the rosy or peach tone(which ever your skin tone is). Also the longer the dress length,mid-calf, ankle, or floor will give you the appearance of being taller. Wear your hair up if you can for additional height.Match your shoes to the dress as closely as you can, so it all flows from top to bottom. keeping the colors from breaking up. Do not wear a tight fitting dress, that will show how thin you are, something a little lose with nice lines. Make sure the dress is not belted or emphasized at the waist it will make you look shorter. You want to be seen by people looking at you in one line from your head to your toes. ENJOY!!!

You're pale and dark -haired, so a red or electric blue(and green, why, not?) dress would be fine.
Avoid pale colors,like pale pink,pale blue...and...white!
The type of the dress you should wear isn't sth that I can describe from the Net,I have to s e e your body type.
However, avoid frilly dresses(as U said). Your prom dress shouldn't make you look older or "drowned in a huge dress"!The simpler, the prettier I think.
Good luck.

Burnt orange would show up any colour you have in your skin, although I'd still dust with bronzing powder (subtly) which should tone in with the dress and give you a glow.
I'd go for something with a fitted, corset-style body, maybe gathered into a bow at the back, and with a gently draping, A-line skirt.
This site has a black dress which is along the lines I'm talking about - although it has a train, which I wouldn't recommend (it'd be begging for someone to rip it):

I am also 5ft but, not so pale. I would suggest a beige or white or tan dress. If you like the dress to be snuggish then go with that!!!!

dorothy perkins have some high-quality dresses out on the 2nd, yet while your promenade isn't for a whilst, then i might wait for the recent summer time collections to return out in shop. they're continually lots nicer thant the spring ones. additionally look in omit selfridge or topshop. =)

You should wear bright colors not pastels or earth tones. With your skin tone and hair color wearing earthy tones and pastels will make you look paler then you really are.
