The book was about an elephant called Chang (I think) and was about the place where the elephants go to die. I read this book in an English literature class, aged 12, in 1965. The book was very sad.

According to a friend of mine, it's "Chang of the Siamese Jungle" by Elizabeth Morse (1930). Chang was a boy, and the elephants were Namba and Bo (?).

From the Foreword to the Original Edition by Merian C. Cooper
"I have just finished reading this tale of a jungle boy of Siam, and it is a lovely romance. It carries one back again to that pleasant land where rivers flow through the mountain jungles of the north down to the southern rice fields, and to the temples and canals of old Bangkok. It makes one long to go there once again. And if any boy or girl has to go to school instead (and who hasn't?) why I know of no better way of taking a magic carpet journey to Siam than by reading this book. It is not only a fascinating and vivid description of the country, but is a capital story too." Got my copy as a presentation, can't remember what for at age 10 in 1951. First published 1933. A fabulous story for children.

I'd be interested in knowing too - it was read to my class in about 1963 by my teacher, Mr Tharme, then he had a car-crash and was off for months and I never heard the end of it. I always thought it was from the Jungle Book

Random story about an elephant graveyard is definitely ringing a vague bell... I'll have a look...

It's a long shot, but might it be "Poo Lorn of the Elephants", by Reginald Campbell, (1957)? I recall that one very vaguely from the 1960s.

I have a vague memory of reading something similar or having it read to me, yes. Chang strikes a chord, too.
