As everyone else has said - yes it is normal cause your hamster is nocturnal. BUT other things can influence their sleeping patterns also, such as light levels, temperature and the time of year. For example, my dwarf hamsters are naturally more lathargic around October/November - and a whole lot more perky around February/March.
If your hamster is cold or near a draft, then he will sleep more. In extreme cases they slip in to hibernation - but this is extreme so don't worry! Hammie will be fine if you have supplied lots of cosy bedding for him.
If you have not had him long - you may find that after a little while, if you are handling and interacting with Hammie, then his sleeping patterns will shift a little - because he will look forward to spending time playing with you. This has happened with most rodents I have kept.
Please don't try to wake him up a lot though - he'll get grumpy!

Yes, it is normal. They are nocturnal animals and will only get up in the day to have a bite to eat, a drink or for toilet needs. Your hamster will be more active through the night, but even then will have periods of sleep.

Hamsters are nocturnal and won't often be active during the day-in the wild they go to bed at dawn and wake up at dusk to avoid predators.
You should have found out about hamsters before buying 1.If you want small pets that are active during the day you should have got a couple of gerbils!

It is completely normal for a hamster to sleep all day. The will general sleep long periods of time, waking up to eat, drink maybe play. They are much more active at nighttime, and as long as you have a wheel or some sort of excersize thing in there for him, he should be fine.

Hamsters are noc-turnal meaning they sleep when people are awake and wake up generally when people are asleep so your hamster is probably out when your asleep =]

He's nocturnal. It's a safety measure. If he was in the wild and went shopping in daylight, he'd be bird food in very short order. Let him go to Tesco Express at night, when there are no owls about and he'll be fine.
