I have a CD-R which, somehow, had a small amount of the surface scratched off of the front side. The disc will now no longer load, so I can't retrieve the files.

Is there anything I can do to "fix" the disc long enough to get the files off it and burn them to a new CD-R? Metallic pen "painting" over the damage? Gluing a small piece of aluminum to the disc? Putting a sticker over the damaged area?

By front do you mean the lable side? If that isdamaged, the data in the area has been destroyed and the CD is probably unreadable.

If you mean the side that gets written to you may be able to polish out the scratches if they are shallow enough... brasso or T-cut (for those who don;t know it... automotive paint surface removal stuff, a creamy abrasive paste). Or there used to be a machine called a disk doctor designed to polish scratches out of the face of CDs.

Hello Christopher

Go to the hardware store and get a can of Brasso. Gently polish with the Brasso. Often that will clean up a CD and make it readable.

Go here to read about CD recovery and repair.

Good luck,
