it is a bit like the mucous you get when you ovulate, only thicker and cloudy with sometimes blood streaks.not everyone passes it, and not everyone gets it in one big gloop, but little bits as your friend describes.Soemtimes it comes away when t he water is broken by the midwife as soemtimes happens in labour. It 's normal to have it and also normal not to experience it.
sounds as if your friend is due soon.

Mucous Plug Looks Like

When you lose your mucus plug, it may be a little or a lot of gel like material. It will may be in a glob, stringy or just wetness. The mucus plug is clear to yellow-brownish in color, but may also be pinkish. Losing your mucus plug does not necessarily mean you are in labor. This can occur up to two weeks before labor begins. This can also occur right as labor is beginning. In some women the mucus plug looks like stringy mucus or a sticky discharge.

I have had 6 children and each one of my mucus plugs was bits of tissue that are similar to mucus you would have in your nose when you have a cold, with a little bloody show the further that she dilates and the cervix thins out the more bloody shoe there will be.

I found this for you:

As you near the end of your pregnancy, your cervix will begin to thin out and dilate. As it changes, you may lose your mucus plug and find a gooey deposit in your underwear or on the toilet tissue after wiping. It is not uncommon for this mucus to be mixed with brown, pink, or red streaks of blood from the changes occurring within your cervix.
