What about a racist slur? Would it matter if the comedian wasn't homophobic or racist? Would it depend on the comedian's ethnicity or sexual orientation for a joke to be told?

It is never truly appropriate, but its appreciation depends very much on the audience.

If Chris Rock began his stage act to a group of middle-class whites how would they react?

Whereas when he performs in front of a crowd of African Americans...

It depends on the joke and to what intent it speaks. Humour sometimes requires a sharp word, the question then becomes is the particular slur required or can a more mundane word be used. Tricky thing humour, not easily balanced and frankly that's the way I like it. Bold, Confronting, unyielding in its ability to make squirm, because sometimes, just sometimes, there is more truth there than we want to admit.

my 2 cents

It depends ever so slightly on how it's used, but it's almost always unnecessary and offensive. Also, most words have been reclaimed, but the "f-word" is one that I still don't like hearing in any context, from anyone. Not all gay people agree with me, but my other queer friends at least know how I feel about it and respect that.

Racial slurs aren't funny. There's definitely no reason for that.

It depends on the comment and on how funny the joke is. Jon Stewart saying, while in Ohio, "What exactly is a Buckeye? Is it a gay acorn?" is not offensive, while someone like Andrew Dice Clay talking about all of the fags that want him is offensive.

It's context. It's also perception. I might find something funny that you find offensive.

There is a thin line on who you can talk about as a whole, ie: gays, blacks, whites, etc: being racist is a no go... i think comedians should talk about people in general and not on homosexuals or hetrosexuals as a seperate...I think its disrespectful

Comedy is comedy. Is it acceptable for a rapper to use ethnic or racial slurs, and homophobic slurs? Rap is worse.

I guess in the context of a joke, it is okay. Sometimes it's better to take a step back and laugh at yourself anyway. It keeps things in perspective.
