I'm looking for an indie rock song from the early or mid nineties, which started off with a guy cynically shouting "Honey, I'm ho-ome.." and then started rocking. The lyrics were about "I can't give you *** (such and such), because blah blah" i.e. a take on the partridge in the pear tree of sorts..

I'm going out of my mind trying to remember more. In all likeliness it's by a British band, and it sounded a bit like An Emotional Fish.

Sorry that I don't know the song but I'd like to clarify that "An Emotional Fish" are an Irish band and not British.

Ive just put the words you gave in lyrics.com and it came up with 221 songs with them in.

Maybe if you do that you may recognise it in the list.
