you need the operating system disk such as windows xp (which you can use to format and reload the operating system in one go)

All the drivers for your hardware, windows will usually have drivers for things such as floppy drive, CD, DVD etc but if you have things such as graphics cards, network cards, you will need the drivers for those.

All programs you use, you should have disks anyway...hopefully

BUT!!!!..... any files that you have created such as word files, excel files etc..need to be backed up onto floppy or cd rom before you format.

Try UBUNTU, you only need the installation disk which has the drivers and will install the most commonally used programs. You can download it, or order a CD, at

http://www.ubuntu.com .

You will also get all the software, that you will ever need, FREE - See

btw, dos is not used anymore, they did away with it 10 years ago..
