if i purchased the core system, would i be able to buy a 20 GB hard drive off of say tigerdirect.com for cheaper, would that work on the system?!?!

Also keep in mind that you have to purchase a hard drive made by Microsoft specifically for the 360. They only make them in the 20GB size at this time.

Yes. But bear in mind: on the core system you only get a Standard TV cable, a wired controller and no Harddisk.
With the premium package, you get a wireless controller, a HDTV cable, that can also be used on Standard TVs, the Harddisk and a Month of Xbox Live Gold for free for up to 5 Accounts on your Xbox.
Also you get a headset to chat with other players during a game.
So all in all, the premium package migt be more worthwile to get than the core and an added harddisk later.
