it's true that i think the universe operates more like a mind than a machine...however, i'm not a theist and am troubled by my own observation...only under perspectives that are relatively disturbing (and arguably skewed) does this become most salient...otherwise i do see a machine that is unaware and unconcerned...perhaps the sentient is actually something bigger, literally, as bacteria and viruses are to us...perhaps we are a growing cancer and should restrict ourselves from spreading?

Unanswerable as asked. Reality is a matter of perspective, ergo philosophical. The known universe, as well as the unknown universe consists of a collection of different types of matter in various physical configurations and constructions and the void spaces between them. The existence of matter is unrelated to philosophy.
