My father taught me to push the button in so it goes up the majority of the way quietly. Just the last couple clicks are heard. His explanation was that you would unnecessarily wear on the teeth in the mechanism.

If that is the biggest problem in your life, I envy you. You can do it either way. The ratcheting mechanism is not going to be damaged by your not pushing the release button. If you would rather press the release when you are setting the brake, go for it!!

I don't think it makes any difference as long as you DO use the parking brake.
