Hydro electric dams work best where you have a deep water source on one side, like Hoover Dam or a water fall. Usually these are NOT close to the shore line. They are building some now that are out in the water and India and China may be getting some in the next ten years.

Hydroelectric power stations work by taking energy out of the water of a river as it falls towards the sea. So you need a big river, and you need to dam the river, flooding huge amounts of land.

The only way to take energy out of the sea is using wave power, and this technology hasn't really been perfected yet.

Because you only take energy 1 time every 12 hours and not continuosly, and the cost will be too high.
