Because the world is round. Everywhere is west of everywhere else if you go far enough.
East and West were defined by European explorers, so they are based on Europe.

It doesn't seem right does it? The Far East is closer to California than it is to Europe....
The reason is that the Greenwich Meridian (in London) is historically and traditionally the point from which East and West (in global terms) are measured.

The far east is considered where Japan is. On maps, Japan is the farthest country to the east. California is one of the farthest states on the west.

Quite simply. it is because the world is round and the first Europeans to visit Asia traveled by land going East. Because of time zones, which are somewhat based on imaginary lines of longitude, traveling west will send you ahead in time, while traveling east, from Asia will be like going backwards in time. This is not actual time yravel, but just reletive. For instance, taking a jet from japan to Los Anfeles, it is quite common to arrive in Los Angeles, time wise before you left Japan.
