Mechanic told me I had a pinion seal leak. What is it, where is it, approx. how much will it cost to fix, and can I do it myself? I'm not a mechanic, but I'm not an idiot either. Is this someting to do with steering?

A pinion seal goes to you differential. It is where the driveshaft bolts up to the axle.Look under you vehicle and find the driveshaft/s.Look where it is bolted to the axle.Is it wet or leaking around it??Well that is your pinion seal where the yolk of the differential meets the housing. They are easy to change but your gonna need some very big sockets. If your gonna do it,first count the threads coming out of the nut on the backside of the yolk. This will help you remember how far to retighten the nut after you replace the seal. After you take this nut off,the yolk that hooks to the driveshaft will just slide out.Your seal is right there!!There is a proper tool to remove this seal but you can do it with a screwdriver.Pop out the old seal, you may lose a small amount of gear lube from the axle housing.Just clean up the area where the old seal was and install the new one with a large socket that matches the circumference of the new seal, and bang it in with a hammer.Be sure you put some grease around the part of the seal that rides on the yolk itself.this will help seal the yolk while its moving.I hope this helps. You will have to unbolt the driveshaft first before being able to access the yolk nut.I know your not an idiot but if your vehicle is a 4x4 then you will have 2 pinion seals, one in the front and one in the back.be sure you check them both and refill the differential with lube after replacing it.--If you decide to take it to a shop,it better not cost anymore than 75-100 dollars.good luck.

This is going to sound like a sarcastic answer but it's really not. I've been told the word JEEP should be an anagram that stands for "Just Empty Every Pocket". Trade that lemon in for something reliable, like a Toyota or something.
