My workmate is going to an 80s party tonight. He wants to know what clothes can he get to wear that were fashionable in the 80s but still look cool. He's slim, 6ft tall with short black hair.

Definitely big shoulder pads. If he's wearing a jacket he should push the sleeves up to his elbow. What about a Wham t-shirt - or is that a bit too weird!
I'm female so can't just think of anything else that men used to wear.
You or he could look on Sky music channels and see if there's anything on from the 80s. That might help.
Just had another thought - trousers should be tight - not baggy like they are these days.
Tell him to have fun.

He could go as Jenifer Beals from Flashdance.
In the sequence at the end of the film when she's doing her audition (what a feelin) part of the dancing is done by a male body double.
All he would really need is a leotard, leg warmers and a curly wig!

or, Maybe him and a mate could pair up and go as
Sonny Crockett & Rico Tubbs from Miami Vice!
They were VERY cool!

Lots of possibilities - the most obvious is probably the New Romantic look. Adam Ant-style pirate or highwayman outfit would probably be ideal - especially if you are prepared to wear a bit of make-up.

Skin tight jeans, don't even think about flares! Converse trainers were in then, as now. How about a white t-shirt with a message? Simple to do, and can look fine.
