i read it in a book : ( Native americans go on vision quest to find answers to this question that " whhat is my place in the world?")
the name of the book was HOW TO CALM DOWN

I think they leave other people and go to a cave where they can be a lone and meditate in the cave and stay there until an animal comes and then that animal serves as their spirit guide that they can use to guide them through their lives. Wade Davis talks about it a little in "The Serpent and the Rainbow."

A vision quest involves removing one's self from everyday life and going to a place of solitude to pray/meditate/dream and usually,if done correctly,one should fast. The time involved is...until one receives an answer but usually not longer than 4 days.
