I was reading a book about Gothic literature. It said that in contemporary society we identify with serial killers like Norman Bates in 'Psycho'. What do you think?

I guess I did indentify with Norman Bates, because he was so lonely and his mother was such an annoying, controlling old woman. The book might be right. I can't really think of any other serial killers, though...

I don't know about identifying with the character of Norman Bates, not for myself personally.........but then I don't consider myself a creepy recluse. However, the act of murder, I think would be a common "idea" people do identify with at some point in their lives, just by virtue of pain and anger, and all the emotions that go with it.....has not everyone at some point felt murderously angry? I guess the difference in people are those whom act on it and those who do not? ........ I don't feel like I am doing justice to your question; but I do think that as a society we have a fascination with serial killers, perhaps it's not the killing, so much as what drives a person to perform such heinous acts, and then to repeat them, and continue to dwell in society undetected?? For me at least I think my fascination or the thing I identify with is the behavior, the analytical part of me wants to know why?????

I've never wanted to dress up as a woman, or , stab someone to death. So, to dress up as a woman AND stab someone to death isn't something I can identify with, other than I thought Psycho was a good film.

Why were you reading a book about gothic literature? Only someone like Norman Bates would read owt like that...

Okay as people we share this earth together. We are all connected in some way. Nobody is really different than anyone else. All of us are capable of murder. How many times have you been so angry at someone that you could have killed them? The choices we make are the only difference between them and us. Some people are mentally unstable. Even people that are "normal" have been mentally unstable at times. for example during traumatic events, when we're angry. The difference is the severity and the length of time and frequency. We have the same thoughts as murderers at times the only difference is we don't act on them.

Nahh..I don't think so.I think it meant that we compare our own personality traits and backgrounds because we don't understand why they do the things they did.We are afraid of becoming like them or knowing that we could.

I didn't think anyone would ever identify with me. This is the first time I've smiled in years.

I'm still going to kill you, it's just now I'll do it with a smile.
