With a little riddle. Two men are working in a ditch, one man says to the other, why are we working on this ditch and our boss is siting in the shade drinking lemonade. The other guy says, I don't know, go ask him. So the first man asks his boss why they are working on the ditch and he is drinking lemonade and the boss says, because of stupidity. So the guy goes back and tells his friend this and neither one knows what stupidity is so he goes back to his boss and asks, what's stupidity, and his boss says, I am going to put my hand in front of this tree and when I say go you hit it as hard as you can with your fist. So the boss says go and the man hits his hand on the tree and holding his now broken hand he thanks the boss and goes back to his friend and puts his good hand in front of his face and says, when I say go you hit my hand as hard as you can with that shovel.

This is a VERY interesting question, BTW! And while I think about it, the answer is not so easy to come by. I guess, we all have our own sense of reality and perceptions. We solve problems (or think we do) based upon our own personal set of what reality is and what our perceptions tell us about the world. In a nut-shell then, reality is created by the individual in an immediate sense, and it is also created in a participative manner, by humanity "at-large" which I call, the Collective Consciousness of mankind. The "collective" as I refer to it, is the reality of all of us together as a group. So while your immediate local experience of reality may change from moment to moment, the world in a larger context may appear to remain stable due to the enforcement of "common" experience. What I mean by this, is that today you take a trip to the store and you take the streets and stop lights and see the buildings and trees and tomorrow, you take the same trip and there are the same streets, stop lights, buildings and trees. They have not changed. But what HAS changed, are the individual features themselves, for example, which cars are parked on the street, which pedestrians are trying to cross the streets, which birds are flying overhead - these are the individuals changing, but the experience of the collective remains consistent throughout a given period of time. Over longer periods of time, we notice changes in the collective reality we are perceiving - thus buildings get old and fall apart, streets get changed, stoplights stop working and trees get cut down. In the end, nothing remains constant over a long period of time. In fact, if we look at our world and the universe we live in, nothing remains forever - no matter how well built, no matter how expensive, no matter what we seem to do or not do - everything over time changes, including the Earth. Nothing stands forever. So our experience of life, our personal and collective realities, our personal and collective perceptions are temporary, not permanent fixtures that remain constant throughout all-time. What stupidity is, is the inability to grasp what one or more individuals call the collective reality. This is why an individual may sincerely believe their personal reality makes sense, when another person or a group think that that person lacks "common sense." And, let's face it, stupidity may consist of other things along with it, including, the inability to see detail for what it is, the inability to cognitively assemble logical constructs, a social dearth inbuilt into one's limited perceptions (a social form of stupidity in terms of narrow minded opinions and thinking). What we take for granted as our reality may not be the reality of others, and what we cognitively are able to assemble, may not be universal. It won't be the first time in history, when a genius with extraordinary insight was mocked and called a "stupid person," only later to be recognized for their genius. But most of all, "stupidity" is our own personal judgment of what is so. Because we judge it that, doesn't make us right or wrong, for those things are also personal assessments. We may say a person is stupid because the outcome of their actions results in failure - yet failure itself is just a personal judgment of what is so - If a person is "stupid" enough to put water into a gas tank, and the engine sputters and dies, we say, "that was a very stupid thing to do." Yet, there are mechanical engines which separate hydrogen from oxygen and use the hydrogen as fuel and thus the idea of using water as fuel is not stupid, but the apparent "wrong" attempt to apply the idea to a gasoline engine appears to be "stupid." Thus, ideas which are looking stupid are not stupid in themselves...it is more in what we DO with the idea and the end result, that get's the judgment, the outcome determines how we fashion our opinions of such deeds. I know this is a long explanation, but then, the question is far more complex than what you would think at first. In fact, you can see, my answer is quite detailed - for your reality is not necessarily mine. Your set of social values may be different. Your way of doing things may have more finesse and appear less clumsy. Or you may be more prone to a higher level of success than some.
