Your brain is a very complex & amazing thing, you'd be surprised what it is capable of! Although we may not be conciously in control of our dreams, there is still a part of your conciousness that remains "switched on". Parts of your brain are still very active when you dream, and the signals from these parts of your brain seem to feed into this part of your conciousness, which tries to make sense of them. So you are not actually fully unconcious when you dream, it is just that you are not concious of the world around you.

Lucid dreaming is an interesting one, though. I don't think anyone really knows what is going on when people dream lucidly; it's very hard to reproduce in a laboratory so it is hard for scientists to study. One theory is that there is simply more of your conciousness involved than in "normal" dreams, in other words, more of your concious mind is "awake". The part of your brain that conciously controls your actions in everyday life might be the same part that controls them in lucid dreams.

In normal dreams, they are not really "directed" at all. You dream in REM (rapid eye movement) sleep - a less deep stage of sleep when various parts of your brain are still active. The inputs from all these parts of your brain feed into that part of your conciousness that is still "awake", which tries to process them as best it can. One theory about why we dream is that is a kind of organisational process in your brain - a bit like organising your house. The brain runs through some of the experiences from the day, along with things that have been stored in your long term memory, in order to store them more efficiently, and to make better connections between related items (just like if you were tidying your house - you pick something up and decide to put it on a shelf with some related items, or find something important that you need to think about, or something that you no longer need etc.). This may be why there seems to be at least a grain of truth in some kinds of dream interpretation - your dreams reflect the things that have happened to you & that you have been thinking about. If there is something important in your life it will be more likely to appear in a dream, as your brain needs to process it more. When we are awake, we tend to supress the more unpleasant thoughts, but there is less holding us back when we are asleep so these thoughts will often appear in our dreams too.

Dreams can be very strange because they are not governed by logic. The brain is not actually trying to create a "story" - that is almost an accidental byproduct of the process (called an "epiphenomenon" by psychologists). But our brains can't help but try to make sense of these thoughts, so they get strung together into some kind of surreal story that barely makes any sense! Despite this, there does seem to be a "flow" to dreams that you wouldn't expect if they were truly random (which some people believe they are). This is probably because there is a "flow" of connected thoughts in the brain - one thought leads on to another in a fairly coherent way, which makes the dream "feel" logical, even if it isn't!

Dreams are in many ways just most of the mind continuing to work with the sensory inputs "switched off" (or at least turned down to a very low intensity). If anyone is directing them it is you, but only part of you. The rest of you is asleep!

No, but our subconscious is allowed to run freely in our sleep.
It takes in the day and the things that stood out to us and mixes them up with a worry or a pleasure we have in the back of our minds. Dreams can be a piecework account of what and where we have been or they can be vivid and sending us a message about something we need to do or what we are experiencing. You are the dreamer and only you know what is right. When you match the feeling the dream gave you to what faces you in life, then hopefully you can match it to a situation you need to handle.

Theere is no direction. Normal dreams are random, driven by free association. I know this does not specifically and fully answer, but it is in the right direction. Images are randomly linked with other images, from our emotional tone and the events of the preceding day. How they get orchestrated into these little movies we watch at night, is unknown.

Of course it's us directing them. It's our subconscious mind telling us what we want to dream.
