A hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus. Sometimes only the uterus, sometimes the on or both of the tubes/ovaries, cervix as well.
There are several reasons a woman might have a hysterectomy: uncontrolled bleeding, cancer, fibroids and other female problems.

"ectomy" on the end of a medical term means "removal of" which gives a clue that it's not a condition. Rather, it is, as said before, the removal of the uterus or womb. There are different types: A Total Abdominal Hysterectomy is an operation performed through a surgical incision in the lower part of the abdomen where the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries are removed. The cervix is taken along with the uterus and the vaginal vault is closed. An abdominal hysterectomy is as above but the ovaries are preserved & so still produce the hormones in the body. A Vaginal operation is the removal of the uterus & cervix through the vagina therefore not leaving an abdominal wound. The operation is carried out for a number of reasons but rarely do women consider other alternatives.

MEANING : A hysterectomy is an operation to remove a woman's uterus (womb). The uterus is where a baby grows when a woman is pregnant. In some cases, the ovaries and fallopian tubes also are removed. These organs are located in a woman’s lower abdomen (see image below). The cervix is the lower end of the uterus. The ovaries are organs that produce eggs and hormones. The fallopian tubes carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus.

A hysterectomy is not a disease it is a treatment. It is where the female reproductive organs are removed. As I am sure you can imagine it is usually a last resort as I think it always makes the woman unable to have children.
I seem to recal women have this if they get cancer in their ovaries but I may be mistaken.

It is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus and sometimes the ovaries and cervix. It is usually only offered after all other treatments have been considered. Post -operative it is uncomfortable as all patients will need to ensure bed rest for at least two - three weeks and not do any manual work or lifting for at least another ten weeks. Depending on the extent of your operation you may also have to consider whether you now want to have HRT
(Hormone Replacement Therapy) optional. If this is a procedure you may need your doctor - gynaecologist should be able to better inform you.
P.S It worked for me.

It is an operation involving the removal of the womb. You can have a total hysterectomy (ovaries, womb, cervix) or partial, just womb or womb and cervix. It is not a medical condition you have the operation BECAUSE of a problem eg cancer, fibroids etc.
