Just a friend? Preferably nothing. If he's like most men, he'd probably rather Valentine's Day pass as quickly and silently as possible.
If you feel you MUST do something, a telephone call is enough. If you buy him a gift and he gets you nothing, you'll just cause him guilt.

spend the whole day with your lover,celebrate somewhere in private.with a lot of balloons,wine,flowers for her.give her a nice card with some nice words.or if you really love her immensely,give her a gold ring.go out for a drive in the evening.and spend time near a lake
