Hitler was appointed Chancellor in 1933 by von Hindenberg if my memory serves. It was a disputed election with no clear winner and the Nazis wound up on top.
Keep in mind that Germany had endured a very harsh period of hyperinflation 9 years earlier. This was brought on by the Treaty of Versailles and the French government's desire to punish Germany further.
The talk of militarizing the economy had the appeal of never allowing that to happen again.
It's also worth remembering that no one knew IN ADVANCE what the Nazis were going to do. They appealed to Germany's sense of humiliation after WWI and the hyperinflation.
All wars are fought for defensive reasons on both sides. Even when they invaded Poland, Austria, France and North Africa it was for the defensive vision Hitler espoused in Mien Kamph. The Aryan Race had to protect itself from the mongrel races-per Hitler.

He had dope rhymes.... Actually, he was very popular because of the situation facing Germany at the time. The great depression was wreaking havoc upon the whole international system, but specifically harder in Germany because of the Treaty of Versailles at the end of WWI. The treaty basically made the Germans take all the war guilt for the war, and demanded they pay back the allies. It also stripped them of their valuable overseas possessions. This made Germany incredibly poor and inflation skyrocketed. Hitler came along at the right time and promised food work and German brotherhood. The people threw themselves at Adolf. He brought pride back to the Germans, he preyed on the public's common fear of Jews, he brought back the military - even though it was illegal. He made Germany great again. EDIT: ok some of the posts thus far are clearly supposed to be funny/offensive but then the one about hitler having a popular father, what history book are you reading? everything you write is untrue...

After WW1 the Germany economy was terrible. HItler and the Nazis tried to overthrow the goverment but, failed. While in prison for the attempt he wrote Mein Kemp a book about the failed government and how it was the fault of the "lower races". The book gained followers and they placed him in power a short time after he was released from prison. Many people were out of work and poor, Hitler blammed the problem on the Jews and Gypsies.

Hitler could not have democracy as part of the government because he desired to squeeze out the will of the people and yet win their undying allegiance. His programs of expansion militarilly under the guise of caring for German citizens in foreign countries and his demonic killing of a race could only be the marks of a mad dictator and could not come about by the vote of the people but a totalitarian menace.

It is quite complex, but Hitler was NOT elected, so your previouis answerer should read some history himself. Essentially, due to the terrible political and, especially economic, climate, Hitler was able to ram through his policies and, with the help of a number of political fools who squabbled among themselves, he was able to divide and conquer. He then removed the electoral system and was proclaimed dictator.
