often times, when we thank someone for something, the tone we use, acts as a "meter". i know that i have been offended in the past when i went out of "my way" to accommodate someone, and received a very sterile response. is this being too sensitive? maybe! i think we all are looking for appreciation and i know it has often made my day when someone acknowledges my efforts!
so... i would say, a simple "thank you" and a smile is not only the simplest but the best form.

In our culture a look into the eyes and a simple 'thank you' works well.
The reason I specified 'our culture' is because there are some social groups where people do not look into another's eyes.

Being grateful for the things we take for granted is a good start.
Your morning coffee, fresh air, clean clothes, money in your wallet, your pet, the morning paper, the abundance of food offerings at your grocery store.... and so on!!
Notice everything as a blessing and give thanks. When we do so everything in our lives changes for the better!
Blessings and thank you for the question you asked!
