Pay monthly is the cheapest way to get a cell phone by and large, because the phone companies get the benefit of knowing a large part of their income stream from you for the next twelve months, so feel less need to rip you off for minutes and texts.

Shop around, you can pay much less than £ 35 a month, and get buckets of minutes and texts. Until they start paying me, I'm not going to make a specific recommendation, they're not that different from one another.

Yes, you have to pay VAT on all mobile phones, but this will be included in the quoted price.

Just go to every mobile phone shop in your local area, and see what their deals are like. NEVER buy on the first visit, make them beg for your custom. Places like Phones 4 you and Carphone warehouse are more likely to negotiate than the operator owned stores, but these will tend to have lower prices to start with, and give you less sales chat.

Best of luck,

Every service / product has VAT (value added tax) on it. Both pay-as-you and pay-monthly phones have the same rate of VAT. In most of Europe it's about 20 or 21%.

When companies advertise a monthly phone packet *usually* this is the total price including the VAT but you should check the small print or ask the person selling it to you to be sure.

The only difference is that with pay-monthly phones you get a detailed breakdown in your bill so you actually see how much the tax is, with pay-as-you-go phones it's built into the cost of each call/SMS.
