Their independence is long overdue. ITS ABOUT TIME !!!
They were the first to claim independence in Yugoslavia in 1991 and the last to gain it !! Well, maybe not last. Let us see if Vojvodina gets theirs. If Kosovo was such an "integral part of Serbia," why was the territory AUTONOMOUS FOR SIXTY YEARS and why were its people not allowed to vote on that piece of legislation ?!?
In response to the meaning of its name, does that mean Belgrade (the name founded by the Bulgarians in their empire) should be governed by Bulgaria ?!?
If you guys use this as justification, SERBIA WOULD NOT EXIST ANYMORE !!! We'll see if they choose to have a referendum on the name of the country when they get independence.
In response to the POPULARIZED historical crowning of Serbian kings in Kosovo, does this mean that since the Seljuk Turks were crowned in Persia, that means Iran belongs to Turkey !?!
You guys have to come up with stronger arguments than that or you'll only delay the inevitable.
Oh, I almost forgot to answer the question. The best way forward is FULL INDEPENDENCE

Well, you heard what the two sides think about each other.
As one of the sides and close enough, believe me, they are average representatives.
Do you think they will live together? Or be at least good neighboors? No, they will not.
Kosovo is de facto independet, but from the point of international law what happened is that NATO invaded Serbia in order to help the secession. That is the only reason why this situation is handled delicately.
Kosovo will be independent and under supervision so that the remaining Serbs will be protected at least in that way. Unfortunately, we will soon see them fledding into Serbia.
The least unfair solution is to allow small northern part of Kosovo where Serbs are vast majority to remain with Serbia, while the rest will be independent. That will be the only compromise that will reduce the number of refugees. It will still be 10000-20000 but less than 100000 otherwise. Keep in mind that already 200-250000 Serbs left Kosovo since 1999.

Kosovo is Serbia, period. "Kosovo-Metohija" translates in the Serbian language to "Field of Blackbirds -- Church Land". "Kosovo" means nothing in the Albanian language, nor does their nickname for it, "Kosova". Serbs named the place, not Albanians.
The vast majority of Albanians have flooded into Kosovo since WWII, when Tito invited them to come help him become the Stalin of the Balkans. It was Tito's plan to take over Albania and Greece when Tito was funding the communist side of the Greek civil war. But Tito lost when Albanians chose Chinese communism and Greece rejected communism altogether. Then the Albanians in Kosovo turned the tables and resumed their campaign for a Greater Albania, outbreeding and bullying the Serbs into leaving Kosovo. Milosevic cracked down hard on Albanian seperatists, and for God knows what reason, President Clinton decided to back the Albanians' ambitions in Kosovo.
More Kosovo Serbs have died at the hands of Albanians since the NATO Bombing than Albanians died before it. Over 150 ancient Kosovo Christian churches have been desecrated or destroyed by the Muslim Albanians -- and Serbs in Kosovo literally live behind barbed wire fences and cannot leave their homes without armed KFOR guards for fear of being killed. The entire Jewish community in Kosovo was forced to leave, so that Kosovo has become nearly ethnically pure Albanian. And now Ahtesaari and the UN expect the remaining Serbs to trust the Albanians, in what even the Voice of America approprately called the "Final Solution"? It's lunacy!
And if independence is granted, it will only encorage the Albanians in Southern Serbia, Macedonia, Montnegro and Greece to do the same -- and this will undoubtedly cause more wars in the Balkans.
Kosovo indpendence would require breaking international law to establish, and would open the floodgate of demands from other seperatists groups in regions where a minority group is a majority in a compact area of another country.
Then there is Russia and China, who both promise to veto any Kosovo independence idea in the UN Security Council, if it is proposed.
Ahtesaari's plan -- or any plan that does not acknowledge Kosovo as sovereign territory of Serbia -- will cause far more problems than it solves. And to be blunt, we already spent billions on the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia for the Kosovo Albanians -- are we really willing to go to war with Russia and China over them? Absolutely not!

First of all, stop with all this crap how kosovo is serbia's heartland. it is not, kosovo was always with albanians, you defeated the turks, and you conquered the land so therefore you took advantage of the weak, and now you tried to get rid of that whole race in the country and it backfired. You should have thought of this, it was never your land, you stole it! im ok with the proposal, but it would have been better for independece right away. Serbia just needs to accept the fact, and you can't do anything about it. Saddam paid for what he did, Hitler paid for it, and now serbia is as well. so long and don't cross the border!!

Would'nt encourage it in any way.Kosovo is part of Yugoslavia.
How would you feel if a bunch of mexicans kept causing civil disobedience in Texas and the US govt had to exert her authority.
It's the same thing, and just because the people of Kosovo speak albainian. This does'nt alter the fact that this is Yugoslavia
