Many of our British folk, once renowned for their immense self-discipline and self-reliance have now become lager louts, drug addicts, food junkies and shopaholics.

Why? what went wrong with us?

The media...imitation of the worst. As long as they find their role models in programmes like Big Brother, Little Britain etc. these models will be perpetuated. Years ago there were also lager louts etc. but they were a socially unacceptable minority. Now somehow it has become "cool."
The answerer above me is on the right track. I quote from a mideval Italian text (translation): "Take a Goth, a Hun and a Vandal...mix them together and make him drunk, and you have an Englishman." They were already famous for this kind of behaviour. Read Chaucer. Some things never change.

Breakdown of the family unit is a lot to blame: people do not have the support once provided by the extended families. Because of this people are growing up influenced by the wrong sort of things ie advertising for monetary gain which has replaced the good messages our parents and relatives used to teach us. The television has replaced Granny and to an extent mother and has been teachihg life lessons since the seventies, its not good and its time our government woke up. The wrong values are ruling our lives.

We are of course - we voted for the politicians who come in and stopped the teachers from being allowed to discipline the children in schools, we took away the parents rights to discipline their children - I do not smack my children but there are some teenagers in my area that need a good clip around the ear, the police are powerless to an extent - what on earth did we think would happen when we allowed all this to take place

Unlearn everything and start leading a simple life. This would involve close knit family, emotions, pleasure and pain taken in the same spirit, etc., Now you know what is the reason for the current state of the British People. They have come one full circle they need to start again

The turning away from God and the liberalism within the education system. Both these things have moved down into society as the children of the liberal 70's like me, become the parents of the society now. As a society we are putting our selves first. One of the christian concepts that I admire is the preferring of others. Unfortunately the preferring of self has become so popular that even parents prefer them selves to their own children. Children are becoming an appendage rather than a beautiful loved vocation. Is it any wonder our children have no guide lines when we as parents don't value those guide lines.

To add to the Hogarth reply, there was also the lesser known cartoon of Beer street, where people weren't disgustingly behaved (as many are now.)

as to why people are so foul now it is partly the liberalisation and mainly a lack of any kind of self control.

40 years of propaganda in the classroom and PC conditioning have led to this current disaster among our people.

The people to balme for this are the ill-judged left wing supporters of multiculturalism. I'm left wing myself but think that to encourage different groups to keep their own identity and not integrate is complete madness. The fact that there is no longer any common British identity and anyone looking to build one being branded a racist has destroyed the country. If people have no pride in their identity, community and culture how can they be expected to have pride in themselves. People need to have a clear idea of who they are and where they came from to have pride in themselves. The fact that most people are made to feel ashamed of their British identity has also allowed the concept of Britishness to be hijacked by far right lunatics and racists. By the way I'm Irish not British but I often go over to England and I follow the news there and read British papers

This is the way we are. Throughout recorded history us Brits have been boozers and pissheads. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of our social history will say the same. Look at Hogarth's picture "Gin Lane" This was not a problem isolated to a small quarter of London, nearly the whole country was permanently pissed.
To say that it is a fault of multiculturalism and liberal values is kneejerk bigotry and stupidity put around by the Daily Mail and its camp followers who have no grasp of history.
It is the Brit character for you, it is the way we are and no amount of reactionary waffling about liberal multiculturalism being to blame is just plain dim.

It is evident that there is lack of respect woth parts of the community. Unfortunately, it now runs in generations and the children know no better. I think decline of religion is related to this problem. I am not saying that non religious people are not good people by the way.

A people must take responsibility for its culture. Blaming outsiders or phantoms is never acceptable in God's eyes. It is difficult these days to find anyone who wants to take personal responsibility for their actions. This is also true on the national level. Ultimately, government is responsible for the condition of its people and sovereign territory.
