One of the best new cars that are affordable, have great warranties, and seem to have few maintenance problems is KIA. They also have very good front end crash ratings.

In general Toyota, Mazda and Nissan are the most reliable. Hondas are also good but they get fragile after a few years.
Get their biggest selling models in whatever brand for the lowest parts cost. The models with engines around 2 litre capacity are good for most purposes and are easy on fuel. Smaller engines have to rev harder and that can be a bit wearing for the occupants (and the engine) on a long journey, and they don't necessarily return much better fuel economy. Don't go less than 1.5 litres, preferably not less than 1.8. Small cars with short wheelbases, often with small wheels give a poor ride. This is basic physics and all the suspension design in the world can only alleviate, not negate it. And the smaller the car, the worse the overall safety.
Your choice of vehicle will depend on your intended use. Think about it.

Honda, I bought a Honda CRX HF (a sporty version of the civic) in 1990 it now has 425,000 miles on it, doesn't use oil, and has never broken down, it gets 51 mpg minimum and I have gotten as high as 69 mpg. Maintenance for this car is every 90,000 miles instead of every 60,000, I'm sure Honda is building something simular to it today. Honda has always gotten the highest marks on average from Consumer reports magazine on the reliability end.

In my experience the Honda Civic fits for the answer. These cars are low maintenance, reliable and give great gas mileage. Also, the over all quality of the car is excellent, it is very good on what you get for your money.
