This is kind of hard. I think they can both be just as powerful. Written can stay around for a long long time for generations to see . I think spoken can be just as powerful because you can hear the attitude and the tone of the way the person is saying it. Which can be so wonderful or sting and be so harsh.
Great question by the way.

most great leader led by the spoken word
Hitler
Churchill
Roosevelt (both) FDR and teddy
They all wrote books but most would agree their speeches is what put them into power..plus a lot of $$$
Christ taught his follower by his sermons. The New Test. had not been written when the church was first created. The Bible took a long time to come into existence. In fact the early church did not have access to the written word until after Gutenberg invented the printing press in the middle ages about the time Luther translated the Bible from Latin into German so the common man could read the actual text.
The Protestant Revolt soon followed the written word so oral history came first and was the most effective. How many church members even bother to read the Bible? Most just go to Church and hear the message..I too am guilty of this...duh

That's a good question and quite difficult to answer. Initially I was edging towards the written word, because anything official or related to law, maybe even military tactics etc, has to be put down on paper somehow, somewhere.
or dam, lost my trail of thought... In short I think there is very good examples for both written and spoken words being very powerful, and would argue that the most powerful approach is the one which is used in the appropriate context.

It really depends on how it is delivered.
If the spoken word is delivered where the speaker is making eye contact with his / her audience and is pointung a finger at them, that can be very powerful.
As for the written word, if it is written using the "you" approach; that is, it is written like "You need to do this" or "You are responsible for this" or "It is up to you to get this in on time" then that can be pretty powerful as well.

I believe it's the written word that has more power. My reasoning? Check out the Bible. Lots of people believe in what the Bible has to say. I really can't think of anything that anyone has said that has affected the lives of more people than the Bible has. And I'm not even Christian!
(Oh, and there's the Weekly World News, but I'm not sure how many people believe that.)

i imagine that written words are better sensible because if someone writes a e book, those words should be remembered for numerous generations. you're waiting to percentage your perspectives with a better different target market, and they could study about your values. In my journey, maximum words that are spoken are forgotten purely about as instantly as they got here out. All too many times because little unique concept is going into them, they're deemed trivial or unimportant. also, I have tried in a good number of cases to study about historic societies and historic figures. I have tried to study about what some people did or what some people reported. in a good number of cases the answer is, "we do not understand what they did. they did not write it down."

Well, I can scream so loud that I can break glass, but words written down, in a big thick book, pack a mighty punch when hurled in the right direction. So I'm going with the written word being more powerful. I've never given anyone a black eye just by speaking to them!...
