I just bought a comp, with 5 sata conncection and 1 ide channel.
I have 1 sata harddisk and 1 dvd burner on the ide channel. I have set the jumper to slave for the dvd. MOBO is MSI P965 Neo.

On boot up, the cpu cannot detect the ide drive during the ide devices phase, but later displays ODD0: DVD RW DRU820A.

I am unable to boot up with a start up disk in this drive either.
BIOS does not detect the dvd drive.
This is a new computer which was just self assembled

just from a quick overview of that particular MB from the manufacturers site it looks like the IDE connection is on the southbridge controller. if that is the case then you actually will have to install a driver for the southbridge controller to get it to activate the IDE port so that it will recognize your optical drive. think the controller was ICH8 which is an intel controller so intel would have the driver for that. MSIs website also had a download on the site for the MB that enhanced that port so it might have the additional driver to enable the port as well.

If the hard disk is SATA and the DVD is IDE, you only have one drive on the IDE channel, the DVD drive. The SATA controller and IDE controller are seperate. Hence, you have a DVD drive set as slave, but no master for it. You need to set it to master.
