Vitamin D3 (Calcitriol, a hormone) is important for proper growth and developement of our bone, teeth and muscles.deficiency of this vitamin causes rickets and oestomalasia i,e. bone defect.
precursor of this vitamin 7 -dehydroxycholesterol is present in the malphigin layer of skin, which converts in to vitamin D3 only in presence of sunlight. (photon of light) so sunlight is necessary for synthesis of vitamin D.

Careful about this - it is a trick question.
The above posters are correct in that your body produces Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. As mentioned you can also get this from food, but not enough. Still, you only need very little exposure to get all the vitamin D you need - I think it was something like 15 mins a day (don't quote me on that...I'm not 100% on it). Even being in the shade should get you enough light.
Sunlight as you know, also has harmful UV radiation. UV radiation causes mutations of DNA - and this is why it can cause cancer. A little sunlight is good, WITH sunscreen lotion and not for long periods of time. Too much sunlight is bad for you.

The sun makes vitamin D. Most people are more or less deficient in Vitamin D. Yes. Most of us most of the year should spend more time in the sun. Especially darker skinned people (Who need more sun to make the same amount of Vit. D) and especially in the winter, when the sun is low in the sky and less powerful.

Yes. Our bodies need Vitamin D which is found naturally in sunlight.
Very few foods are naturally rich in vitamin D which promotes bone formation and regulates calcium and phosphorus levels in the body.
