Hibernation is the slowing down of all bodily functions. Sometimes an animal, like the tortoise, will slow down to the point that it's heart rate and breathing seem to actually stop. At this point, they don't Need food, and digestion stops, just like all the other body functions.

Any food left in the stomach will just rot and cause severe problems once the gastrointestinal system has shut down during hibernation.

Too much food in the stomach during hibernation will 'sour' or start to ferment while it is in there.
