In a fit of temper with my machine a few weeks ago, I pulled off the handle to open the door.
Leave it for the required two / three minutes, then edge a knife into the area where the door handle should pull back, and just wiggle until the door opens. All that fiddling took a few minutes until I got the nack of it, but now it opens fine....albeit with the knife.

Would need to know what make of washer it is to advise properly. Miele have a little plastic opener which you can use to manually open the door(if there's still water in machine be aware you'll get wet), and other machines have a pull switch in with the fuzz trap (usually bottom left hand side on front of machine). A Siemens machine will have an 'empty' option(usually anyway) which will take 1 min to allow door to open.
If no joy then find the instructions and have a read-or ring your local electrical retailer and ask them for details of how to get it open-their expert should be able to tell you from make to make what your best bet is.

Turn the hot and cold waterthat fills the machine off. Then disconnect the blue and red pipes on the back, and have a bowl ready to catch any water that spills from the pipes. This will take the water pressure off the drum. Then wait 5 minutes, and try the door to see if it will open. Forgot to mention to turn the electric off as well.

Pull the washing machine out and take the securing screws at the back out - lift the lid off and you will see the catch inside. Just stick your hand in and release the lock. TURN THE POWER OFF FIRST!!!!!

can you use the spin cycle?
if so use it and then take clothes out or else a big bucket to catch the water once the timer has expired
or you will need to take the lid off and flip the catches either side

swift HARD whack with a hammer may work...... on the other hand, try getting it to do a drain cycle at least so you dont flood your kitchen... then after a delay of turning the machine off completly you should be able to open door... if it dosnt... revert to hammer.....
