My mother is about to move into a nursing home and would like to sell her 50 year old dinner set which was quite expensive to buy. Is there an internet site or similar where I can find out the value of such items?

Try typing the brand into search. Do a comparison on EBay auctions. Inquire at an antique shop. See what Replacements Unlimited is asking for replacement pieces.
Bear in mind that if you sell to someone who intends to resell, because of their overhead and the need to make a profit, they can only pay you about 50% of the market value.

Kovels or similar antique book if you think the set is really old and is decorated with a lot of gold or platinum then take it to an appraiser they charge about 10% of the value to appraise but they will give you a better appraisal. much of the appraisal will depend on how many pieces and what shape it is in. If it has a lot of cracks and chips the price will be considerable less.
