Blod Sugar Sex Magik. It's as though Hillel's death had meant something - that they found John and the final peice of the jigsaw popped into place. They came of age and found their sound with that album - and it was a tightrope walk as to whether they went under to drugs and debt, or started to crawl out the other side - and we all know which way it went...
Apart from all that, it's such a vibrant, raw, energetic sound with some hilarious lyrics and some deep emotion. They would never have been able to get away with One Hot Minute (which deserves the slating usually reserved for Mother's Milk) if Blood Sugar hadn't been so great and it certainly influenced Californication - which is probably their second best.

It's Red Hot Chili Peppers after a fresh start. They really pulled through some hard times to get to that point.
