I sometimes babysit my roommate's two kids at night while she is working (less than 2 hours). Actually, I don't do anything because two kids are sleeping. Also, my roommate often goes to the bar and come back in the morning (maybe twice a week). I get paid $5 for each babysitting not hourly. My roommate says I don't do anything because the kids are sleeping, so she doesn't pay me hourly. I understand that I don't do anything but being at home and sleeping until she comes back at 5 am. However, if I am not here, she can't go out even her kids are only sleeping. So I feel like I should get paid hourly. I am very convenient roommate for her because I don't say anything. But I don't want to do this anymore. I feel like I am used. However, I feel bad to get paid hourly because I don't do anything but just sleeping. What should I do? Please help me.

Thanks everyone! You guys are awesome!
I am not a native-English speaker, so I can't explain well enough. Apologies. My roommate sometimes works at night as an massage therapist (about twice a week, two hours each time). Plus, she goes to the bar to drink on the weekends (Fri. and Sat.) She leaves at around 11 pm and comes back at around 5 am. I was wondering if I can count the hours when the kids are sleeping because I am not taking care of them.

I know I should stand up...

Who works for 2 hours? This sound a little strange????
She workin the bars?

Really, if she is doin it two nights a week tell her you want a 20 spot for each night she bops in at 5am....

the 5 bucks is fine for the other times. Hey, she got the money, she blowin it in the bars. Don't sound greedy to me.. Just say it's inflation.....

Ask yourself this:
What would your friend have to pay if you weren't there?
Whether her kids are asleep when you mind them or not is irrelevant.
There is not a 2 tier system in operation regarding payment for sleeping and non sleeping kids.
The fact is that for her to have you babysit, you a) Need to give up your time and b)Take on a significant responsibility.
Added to this your friend is secure that her kids are in the care of someone she knows and can trust.
If she has any decency she should at least offer to pay you the going rate.Whether you take it is another matter.
If cash is an embarrassing subject (which it can be amongst friends) then she should take you out for a bite or a drink every so often as a thank you.
Yes you are being used.
Suggestion|?
Make yourself unavailable for a few times and then she'll see your value. It will concentrate her mind and free the moths from out of her purse

I get paid $5 (New Zealand Dollars) so about $10 USD an hour. Regardless whether the kids are sleeping.

Something might happen while one of them is asleep and you'll be there, so you are doing something.

Tell her that you don't have to be at home babysitting her kids. You have a life and you could go out, or work aswell. So if she wants your services she needs to start paying you fairly other wise your services wont be avaliable.

She's taking advantage cause to hire a babysitter is going to cost her $20 minimum everytime. Just tell her straight up, that even though those kids may be sleeping, you are still taking responsibility for them and from now on it's going to cost her a minimum of $20 for 5 hours and $5 for each additional hour after that.

If she don't agree to that then she can find another sitter.

READ to them! Get some books from the library that are written for their age groups, and use funny voices for the characters. This is one of the best ways to help a child learn, because if they are sitting on your lap, you can point out words that are in the story a lot- like "the" and "a" or "me". I read to my kids all the time, and all 3 of them could read before they were 5. Just make it interesting, by putting a lot of feeling in your voice and they will LOVE it, I guarantee!
