Just thought to add ..... the lawn has gotten a little rain (enough to keep a bit of green in it ) but it doesn't get watered apart from that .

dependant on your climate, my guess is the lawn is suffering from too much water and probaly needs aerating, the black mould could be a type of moss/funghi you may have to to do radical surgery ,ie mark out the area lift the top lawn, this will tell you whats down there, if it a water problem then drainaige is the answer if it is not then apply a moss killer to the top surface white sand will help dry the soil a little and prevent the fungus from spreading. good luck.LF

??!! In the US, I'd advise you to contact your county extension agent -- they are government officials who answer questions about all sorts of household matters and growing things.

Black mold doesn't sound good -- maybe you should contact your local health department. Do your neighbors have it? You may all have to treat your lawns at the same time.

(Leaf mould, OTOH, is black, but very beneficial for the garden, being rotten leaf compost.)

for mold, I'd recommend Daconyl. it's an antifungal compound that can be sprayed and will handle your mold/fungus issues.

I think it's made by Ortho.
