I need to connect my desktop and laptop for file sharing. My desktop does not have an ethernet card. Found in some sites that an USB cross-link cable shall be used to setup a Direct Cable Connection between two PCs. Please let me know the step-by-step method to do the same and also some good brands of this type of cable.

It is slow, but here is a link to a product. You need a special USB cable. It also comes with software you need to install on BOTH machines. By the way, it is soooooo slow to do this.

Your best bet is to use an ETHERNET CROSSOVER cable. This will connect both PC's together utilizing your ethernet card and is way cheaper.

I agree with Timothy's assessment. You may be better off purchasing an ethernet card for the desktop and getting or making a crossover cable. For that matter, you could simply network the two machines together using a hub, router, or switch and move data that way.

good luck!
