Seems like a strange name for a company.

It was when he was in college, he was thinking up a name for a project importing and exporting records, when a young group of girls walk past. One of Branson's mates laughed and said "virgins", and it stuck. Virgin was born!

It was cos he started out the company with a group of friends who were all new at starting their own business ("on Virgin territory" as he put it). That's why it's called Virgin.

Because like a woman for the first time, if you know what I mean, it was a NEW COMPANY thus a Virgin.

It is not strange. It is a virgin name- not used by anyone else as a name.
