Yes they are one and the same.
Athrun is the official English spelling. But the Japanese language has no "th" sound, so the Japanese pronounce it as "A-su-ran". The Japanese syllable "su" is the usual substitute for the English "th"

I think not. By the way, I already watched Gundam Seed Destiny. It is a sequel of the first one. For me, it is much better but more complicated than the first.

Athrun is the English version of the name, and it's actually Asuran, which is the Japanese version. So yeah, they're just one person, I swear. It's in Wikipedia.
