Alright, I can break it down for you although you may not like the answer.

Hard Rock is one of the many subgenres of Rock. It is typically defined as Rock that has a "harder" sound to it, which reffers to the level of distortion used on the guitars and bass, but can also reffer to the pace of the music as well. Hard Rock can be a bit slower and grindier than Rock, but it can be faster as well - the main defining factor is that it feels harder.

Marilyn Manson is in no way the master of Hard Rock - he falls more into the Grindcore or Blood Metal categories. Actually, he kinda falls in between quite a few different genres/subgenres, but not really hard rock.

As for why people listen to it, well...there are a lot of reasons. Usually people that listen to Hard Rock, as opposed to other subgenres of Rock such as Metal or Grunge, are more or less normal people who like a litle bit of spunk in their lives. They aren't into the really hard stuff like Death Metal but they also tend to fall outside the boundaries of Pop and Rock. They like a little bit of spice, just not too much. Hard Rock usually has the ability to get your body to start pumping adreniline into your blood and just plain makes you wanna get up and bang your head(basically an almost feral action whereby the head banger nods their head really far, usually in a rather fast manner) and dance.

Some Hard does deal with the occult, and some of it does deal with sex(just like nearly every genre of music has in the last 60 years). AS for violent subject matter, as a general rule in Hard Rock it's usually no worse than wanting to get up and start moshing(go to wikipedia for a better desctription of mosh pits and headbanging). Generally though, Hard rock doesn't have much in the way of what you might consider "objectionable."

Very few people turn to hard rock because they have unhappy souls - that's what Goth Rock and Goth Metal and Emo are for. *pokes fun at the emo kids* :p

I think what you're trying to ask about is actually several DOZEN different genres/subgenres, but the way you worded it I kinda can't cover that. Ask a more specific question about specific genres or, preferably, a much broader question and you will get some better answers. I hope this helps!

Wow. I feel like I've just gone back in time about 50 years. I didn't realize people still thought rock was "devil music". he he but, here's my opinion: first, i think Marilyn Manson is technically classified as Goth Rock or something, but I guess still falls under hard rock. Personally, the first band that comes to my mind when I hear the term hard rock, is Metallica (even tho they're kinda old). Hard rock doesn't have a specific theme, it just means that there's an electric guitar using distortion, a bass, and drums involved. There are hard rock love songs... but, there's more to life than sappy love songs. Of course, some songs are about sex, drugs, and devils... but, some bands write about political issues, some about childhood issues, some about people they know... some songs, I don't know what the hell they're about, but I just like the way they sound. Hard rock is loud and fast, so it gets me all pumped up when I need it. A lot of times I like to listen to hard rock when I run.

I will try to explain. Though the music that is called hard rock today is a little different then when I was younger. Not all hard rock deals only with devils or sex, it also deals with politics, change, love, and about anything else you could think of. Just like other types of music.I find that I like a song simply because I like the words, or music or both. Be it hard rock or any other type of music. It doesn't matter to me. Yes I even like some Marilyn Manson.
