Having just left Dubai after living there I can see it is no longer cheap for anything except Gold inthe Gold Souk. All the stores are more expensive than the UK for the same goods (example: Debenhams has the UK prices on their goods with the Dirham price next to it and you can work out how much more expensive it is). Since last year the "Knock-off" goods as someone put it are now illegal and are more difficult to find. Don't assume you will get bargains in Dubai although it is a great place for other reasons.

Depends what you are looking for. If its gold, then yes, but don't bother with the famous "gold souk" - go to the "gold and diamond park" instead - much less hassel, and prices are the same (but remember to knock them down a bit).
As for everything else - there is no major difference to the UK.
If you are looking for designer gear, then there are heaps of designer shops in the malls - but you are going to pay the same price as you would in the UK.
If you want to buy copies of designer things (bags and watches, etc)then go to Karama.
One of the biggest savings in dubai is if you are buying a car (i bought a brand new car for the equivilent of 9,000 pounds, which had i bought the same one in the UK, would have cost me 15,000 pounds), and petrol is very cheap - however, these won't be of any benefit to you if you are just coming here for a holiday.
Dubai is a fab place though! I should know, i've lived here 12 years! Have fun!

Gold is very cheap in the Souks (markets) - I got a ring for under half the price of what it would have been in the UK. Don't know about clothes, electricals etc. There is a large Ikea in Dubai and also a lot of UK shops (I think I saw a Debehams and Next).

Dubai prices are among the highest in the world.
it is true that some goods are duty free. However, the high prices of the items makes the tax saving meaningless.
A beautiful place, but not necessarily a place for the thrifty.
