From the sentimental male perspective:
I, at least, like everything from sweets to stuffed animals holding little hearts.
Much depends on finances, however, in addition to sweets, homemade biscuits, perhaps a framed photo of you, or a DVD or CD or anything else he might like.
One of my techiques for occasions like this is to think of something the person wanted but did not get for a birthday or Christmas. The results of one of these sorts of "you remembered" gifts is usually smashing.

Why do you feel the need to buy anything at all? Is this all just hype/pressure from the retailers and advertisers? We have been married for almost 33 years and use romantic gestures every day, not just once a year!! Never a cross word, or an argument. Never a present on Valentines day.

I got my fella some tokens last year that he could give me for 'favours', massages, running his bath, making his dinner, etc. etc.... you get the drift.

He thought they were great. You can get paper ones in card shops or coin versions off I want one of those website, Buy me a gift, firebox.com etc.

Also on there are gold and silver last rolo's which I think are a great idea.

Men like flowers too. I am giving my guy an exotic bunch of flowers, a huge mix of different blooms and buds (which I always do). :-) They love chocolates and perfumes too. If you still think it's too girlish, try ties, wallets, silk boxers, coffee mugs...think of the things he likes or has appreciated in front of you before...

How about jewellery, or edible undies to be had after a romantic dinner that you may cook or buy from a good food place
