if theres air in the system, something else is wrong, it doesnt just get there. you may have a leak somewhere, a bad master cylinder, or someone forgot to top off the fluid after the last brake bleed/service, and as the pads wore down the master cyl. ran out of fluid, least likely, but ive seen it. ( as the pads wear, the fluid goes down, if this is not the case and there is still air in the system, youve got another problem that made you get air) also, is it very soft or just low? rear brakes may need adjusted if it has drum brakes. see mechanic, brakes are important. oh, and you cant "pump" out air. it will need bled, after the problem is found.

You have a leak in your brake system. Not uncommon in a car this old. Start checking along the frame rails for a broken line. Most common spots to look are around the rear axle area and just behind the front wheels. If you don't see anything there it could be the master cylinder or a wheel cylinder. Considering the age of the car I would recommend a complete brake inspection at a reputable service facility. It's the best insurance you can buy.

Air or water in the brake fluid will course a soft peddle. Change oil and bleed air from system this is a common problem in older cars. The brake master slender may need service.Worn brake shoes would not normally give this problem but should be inspected. If the car is old enough the brake cable may be worn and should not be used!

You have AIR in your brake lines, and need to get the brakes bled. It is easy and is not expensive either if that is the problem, which I am sure it is.

Check the level of the break oil ... if its below level change the break pads ... but remember don't add oil to it if its low .. then if its still low and soft u should remove the air from oil tubes ... this must be done by a tec.
