i am doing an a-level ict project, we are designing an improved system for a company, and was wondering what kind of back up storage would be best for a stock/customer database

remote location is considered the best for large important databases. if the remote drive is not an option its generally backed up to a second storage system in the same physical location which can still match the primary storage in performance, which runs parallel and is constantly updated, and which can generally upload to the primary system within a period shorter than one transaction day. that basically means a second storage system on par with the primary.
if its a really small scale company just a second hard drive, maybe an external, can be used.
using dvds is not generally a good idea for a system requiring frequent backup and update, say more than twice a week. the use of dvds poses a security issue as one can be sneaked out easily.
it is possible to rent virtual space with certain organisations for such purposes on a contract basis, but this is not very often used by corporate clients for sensitive data, as they are, often with good reason, paranoid about customer info databases.

Go with a NAS Box which supports mirrioring.

You can get enclosures for as low as 5000-10000.

But 2 500GB Hard Disks and configure them with RAID Mirror.

You can save the backup files to the NAS and since the NAS has mirror option you have 2 copies of the same file in 2 hard disks just in case one harddisk fails.

If you need further clarification get back to me.

In my opinion an off-site storage is the best option.
