I now have it badly and looking back at my horse's behaviour over several years, I suspect he might have had it. He died of Cushings Disease.

Cushings disease inivolves insulin resistance, which as you know can also cause diabetes in humans. Not an answer to your question, specifically, but it sure looks that way.

In 30 yrs working w/horses I've never heard of a diabetic horse, though. Ask your vet to know for sure.

I have heard of only one case of a horse having diabetes. He lived a happy healthy life with regular insulin shots and a restricted feed diet.

Like someone else mentioned, Cushings disease also restricts insulin, so if your horse had Cushings, his diabetic behavior was most likely caused by that instead of just diabetes, if that makes any sense.

Sorry I don't have more information to help you.

It is VERY rare for a horse to be diabetic.
They have problems with things like insilun resistance and they are more prone to Chushing disease and things like that but diabetas in horses is rare.
Most are insilun resistant and they are treated with diet restrictions and exercise.
Cushings can be treated with several types of meds and also diet.
Hope this helps some.
I have an insilun resistant mare and am learning alot about the problem.

in case you keep your sugar point under administration with weight-alleviation plan and workout, hypoglycemia might never flip into diabetes. I had hypoglycemia for approximately 25 years. while my sugar point started growing to be, I knew that I had to be careful or i might finally end up as a diabetic like my mom. For the final 2 years, I even have been waiting to maintain my sugar point in the traditional variety. My physician pronounced in simple terms to maintain doing what i became into doing.
