PIN Code. PIN stands for postal index number. PIN codes are six digits long.
The first digit of the PIN code indicates the region in which a given post office falls in. The second digit indicates the sub-region, and the third digit indicates the sorting district within the region. The final three digits are assigned to individual post offices.
Example - The PIN code for all places in Western India will start with "4". Then "0" indicates Maharastra State. The third "0" indicates Mumbai. Subsequently various places within Mumbai will have PIN codes from 400 XXX. The PIN for The GPO in Mumbai is 400 001 (Fort area in south Mumbai).
