I think it's fine to be shy, but not to be ashamed. Shyness pertains to your privacy, your need of it, but being ashamed connotes something vile.
I am shy about a lot of private things. For instance, if someone asks how much I earn a month, I tend to be shy, and not tell him. Or if someone asks what color of underwear I normally wear, well, that's something-to-be-shy-of item number 2. Lots. Embarassing moments, the person I like, how much I eat--those kinds of personal things, I am shy about them.

Sometimes if I don't know a person real well I can be kind of shy but it's just to see how they are going to react to me.

i used be be shy. but not anymore. oh yes, i am still kinda shy bout raising my hand and asking a doubt in a class or a formal meeting.

i am usually shy especially around new people. i'm not a people person. but my shyness would eventually fade if i become close to someone. i also dislike talking to large groups. i feel akwardin front of everybody.
