Get rid of the House Ethics Committee and put a civilian panel in its place. How can you expect these frat brothers and sisters to police themselves? If convicted of a felony while in office, you not only get booted, you lose your pension on the way to prison. If there is even a serious question of wrong doing, you must step down until that issue is resolved. No more lobbying or special interest groups, period.

Agree w the first part of right you are ken's answer about taking review & sanction authority away from the "club" . Eliminating all special interest groups & lobbying is something many clamor for , until they are made aware they are lobbying themselves when seeking a program or project for their community. Most of us are also members of at least one "special interest group"...we just don't have that perception.

We view lobbying as something big business does, or a special interest group as seeking concessions that don't benefit us personally.

Overall we need to DOWNSIZE the government completely!! We only need the govt to do things we as the community cannot accomplish.

Instead we have this giant bloated out of control monster that most elected officials can't tame....it was there when they arrived.....it will still be there when they depart.

If the govt is only used to do for us what we can't do for ourselves....by definition it will be smaller & less susceptable to influence peddling, greed & corruption.

I feel that you need to look at political corruption as one would any other crime in that do the penalties for conviction currently in force provide sufficient deterrent.?
Personally I feel they don't and political corruption has one significant difference over other offences in that it is exclusively practiced by those in positions of authority and who have contacts and influence. This,in turn means that 'connections' are all too frequently used to cover up crimes and to sweep the whole sordid affair under the carpet.
These offenders are,in my opinion, one of the worst group since as well as committing the offence itself, they are abusing a position of trust and what should be complete integrity.
The only solution that comes to mind is for the public to demand higher standards, more transparent government and stiffer penalties for those misusing their privilege.Once harsh examples are made of one or two miscreants then others inclined to corruption might well think on

Enforce existing laws on the books; disallow campaign contributions from lobbyists; provide free media time to candidates to air their views; penalize candidates who lie, & if they deliberately publish views that aren't true about their opponent, fine them with stiff penalties which would be paid to their opponent's campaign funds; hold elected officials accountable for their personal behavior, if they don't like it, don't run for office, and establish term limits.
